6/7 Game Recap: Indians 5 – Tigers 7

Player of the Game

Asdrubal Cabrera takes home today’s Player of the Game with a score of 3.81. Cabrera had a 2 RBI double along with a run scored after he walked earlier in the game. Asdrubal also had another great defensive play from short as he continues to show off the leather in Detroit. It is just his third award on the season. Derek Lowe‘s score of -5.89 was his second lowest of the season. The only game that was worse for him was two starts ago against Chicago.

Feathers Up

How does Scott Barnes going 4 innings to start his Major League career without giving up a hit or run sound? It sounds accurate, because that is what he has done. He may have struggled as a starter in Columbus early this season, but he is having no problem with Major League hitters late in games. He even struck out Miguel Cabrera today as part of his two innings.

The Indians showed some life late in the game as they attempted a comeback, scoring 2 runs in each the 6th and 7th innings. The Tigers early lead was just too much to overcome for the Tribe.

Even with the loss the Indians still won the series and if the White Sox lose tonight they can remain just a half game out of first.

Feathers Down

Derek Lowe had some terrible luck in the first inning as every ground ball he got found a hole. Lowe allowed 4 runs then and 3 more later in the game. The three runs scored in the 4th had nothing to do with luck as they came by a Brennan Boesch ground rule double and a Miguel Cabrera home run. It doesn’t matter where you position the infielders for those hits.

The Indians should probably rethink Shin-Soo Choo as a lead-off hitter now that Travis Hafner is on the DL. Without his bat in the middle of the lineup, the Tribe can’t afford to waste as strong of a bat as Choo’s at the top of the lineup. With Michael Brantley hitting as well as he has been lately, he deserves another shot at lead off and it would allow Choo to take back the clean-up spot from Jose Lopez. While Lopez has been unexpectedly good this season, he is still not a middle of the order hitter.

Play of the Game

Asdrubal Cabrera hit this two run double in the 7th in a comeback attempt.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 5 – Detroit Tigers 7
